Tutorial: Drawing Progress by Cataclysm-X Tutorial: Drawing Progress by Cataclysm-X
My 5th tutorial's done!!!
Click download to get the larger version.

I know what you're thinking:
'But... oh mighty =Cataclysm-X, why art thou submitting a tutorial which wasn't shown in thy poll?'

Well... like this tutorial says: just 'cause. ;)
Actually, I think it makes more sense if you read this tutorial before you'll see my next (upcoming) tutorials:
  • Proportions tutorial

  • Detailed hair tutorial

  • Besides, I'm looking for my muse. I lost it a week ago. I started with several drawings (actors, Kingdom Hearts...) but none of them look right.

Has anyone seen my muse anywhere? If you'll find it, you'll get a free cookie. :cookie:

I used the work in progress files of my Jared Leto drawing to get this done.
I knew I could use those WIPs for something useful someday... :)

Anyway, have fun with this tutorial!! Hope you'll find it useful!!! :w00t:

When you draw someone from a reference picture, do you draw a grid on the whole paper first & reference picture? If not then how do you start the drawing off?
PinPinFang Featured By Owner Sep 5, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
OH nevermind haha! I read your Proportions Tutorial just now and you do free hand :) So is free hand easier compared to using a grid in your opinion?

But I have a little question...
To make the skin look gray, you first blend all with HB pencil or something like that??
I've seen that "effect" on a lot of drawings and I wish I could do it, but I don't know how :S
    That's why I'm asking you :D
Hope you can help me out here ;P

what do you draw this with?
qikasha Featured By Owner Aug 10, 2010  Student Digital Artist
you are super talented to start with the eyes first then the rest.I usually do a perfect sketch of it and then shade ><
blacknimproud Featured By Owner Jul 31, 2010  Professional Traditional Artist
I've heard it's a must to start with the eyes, but I don't...I know about the eye/mouth stuff that makes or breaks a drawing but I doubt you MUST start with the eyes. I like to move from one side of the face to the other sometimes after I created the skull or head outline. That's okay right?
Shimmering-Elf-Rawr Featured By Owner Jun 28, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Nice drawing! Just one question - how long does it usually take for you to draw a detailed picture like this? I imagine it's a long time! :aww:

love the pic and the tutorial, but whenever i try drawing every strand of hair, i run out of space! how do u cram all of it in and still keep it looking like hair? :)

How on earth do you get such clean, smooth blends with the tortialla thing, mine are always real muddy and crap, paper? pressure?
Misfit47 Featured By Owner Jan 10, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
Thanks for this- Im trying to improve my portraits and this helps. Its hard to break out of some habits though that my art teacher drilled in me. If I tried doing a portrait like how you do, for example, he would've made me start all over. But Im totally going to try and do it the way you've shown in this tutorial- Thanks!

This is awesome... When I "try" to draw a "portrait", my paper is all smudgy and my fingertips are everywhere:D also the "eyes first" technique is great (I always start with a shape of the face and the I cannot draw the eyes properly like here :thumb126599396:)

So A BIG THANKS for your tutorials and I hope I can get better by studying them:D

Hey, thanks for making all these tutorials, Ive been working my way through them one by one, i hvent picked up a pencil in years but youve inspired me to give it another go.
Ive also put your methods to digital, Im working on a piece at the moment of an australian model, using somecool new pencil brushes i found for photoshop and using the techniques youve shared with us.
Its comin along well but will take a long time to finish.

I dont know how to post links but the addressis below if your interested

I wont post up my real pencil sketches yet, still practising with just parts of the face and not tackling a full composition yet but I have improved on my pencil skills greatly since reading your tut's.

    Cant wait to see more.

    see ya

The drawing is awesome, but i didn't like the tutorial at all =( there is NO sketch. it's just your drawing with erased parts. no lineart, nor guides. no one can learn for this. sorry if i'm rude.
